Aberdeen University staff set to strike over job cuts

ABERDEEN University staff are set to walk out tomorrow in a dispute over job cuts after voting overwhelmingly for strike action.

Four members of staff at the university’s medical school face redundancy or poorer terms and conditions.

The University and College Union (UCU) has accused university bosses of potential discrimination because all those under threat “are of Asian ethnic origin.”

Three quarters UCU members who voted in the ballot backed strike action and nearly 2,000 people have signed a petition opposing the job cuts.

Aberdeen UCU spokesman Derek Dawson said: “Making people redundant should always be a very last resort but for the university to be doing this now, just before Christmas, while inviting 400 people to a free Christmas dinner is enough to make you choke on your turkey.”
