Westminster archbishop Vincent Nichols condemns modern-day slavery

The Archbishop of Westminster has slammed the modern-day slavery faced by many workers in Britain today, writes Paul Donovan.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols made the remarks during Sunday’s service at St Mary and St Michael’s Church in London’s East End to mark the 125th anniversary of the Great Dock Strike.

The cardinal said: “We know that working conditions exist today, in this city, which are not far from effective slavery, as well as the presence of extensive de-facto slavery too.

“It is right to struggle against these outrageous conditions, just as it is right to seek to work with those who share a desire to develop a healthy ecology of enterprise in our society today.“

The archbishop recalled the partnership between Cardinal Henry Manning and trade union leader Ben Tillett, who played a pivotal role in settling the 1889 strike.

He added: “What the Great Dock Strike helped to establish was that recognition of this dignity was shockingly lacking in the patterns of employment in force in the London docks at that time.”
