UN medical worker dies from Ebola

AN UNNAMED United Nations medical worker who was infected with Ebola in Liberia died today in a German hospital despite “intensive medical procedures.”

Leipzig’s St Georg hospital said that the man had tested positive for Ebola on October 6, prompting Liberia’s UN peacekeeping mission to place 41 staff members who had possibly been in contact with him under “close medical observation.”

He arrived in the east German city for treatment on October 9 when hospital chief executive Dr Iris Minde said that there was no risk of infection for other patients, relatives, visitors or the public.

The man was kept in a secure isolation ward specially equipped with negative pressure rooms that are hermetically sealed and can only be accessed through a number of airlocks.

All air and fluids are filtered and all equipment is decontaminated after use, Dr Minde said.

The man was the third Ebola patient to be flown to Germany for treatment.
