Banners dipped for Unison’s Roger Bevan

TRADE unionists will attend the funeral today of a popular comrade who died in a recent road accident.

Roger Bevan, a former Unison area organiser and avid Morning Star reader and supporter, was killed on July 14 when his car collided with another vehicle near Lampeter in Wales.

A humanist service for Mr Bevan, 50, will be held at Coychurch Crematorium, Bridgend, with a memorial gathering at Tondu Cricket Club.

Unison Cymru Wales regional secretary Margaret Thomas said: “We are going to pay our respects to a loved fallen comrade and celebrate his life.

“Roger was a staunch trade union campaigner and a passionate advocate for international solidarity.

“Our branches will come with their banners to salute him in the manner he deserves. He was a talented organiser who represented public-sector workers in Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire and they will be turning out in scores to say goodbye.”

Close friend and Unison comrade Dominic MacAskill added: “Roger’s character, the passion he brought to his work and his energy as a principled campaigner left an indelible mark on all of us.”
