Confronting Scottish demons

MacBraveheart

Assembly Rooms

Edinburgh Fringe

5/5

MacBraveheart (the other Scottish Play) suggests that this is a very good question.

Set in a past, post-independence landscape, Philip Differ’s dystopia crackles with sharp wit, humour and wordplay.

Where William Wallace (Gerry McLaughlin) has vanquished all Scotia’s foes — apart from the bastard English — Rabbie Burns can only chronicle the temptations he faces to unseat his leader-aff (James MacAnerney channelling Gerrard Butler).

Scarlet Mack as one of the three witches — apparently Ruth and Johann will be along shortly — is the temptress, or does she just tell us what we want to hear?

In the final analysis, this hilarious play also raises some serious questions about what would be won with independence, or does that matter? Is all that matters that we’ve won it?

See this play if you want a different take on the indy referendum, if you want a glimpse into a possible Scottish future, if you love seeing Scottish cliche lampooned, if you are fascinated by an expert wordsmith playing with his language.

Above all, go if you want a belly laugh! It’s a very important play!

Assembly Rooms until August 24 at 1.15pm. Box office www.arfringe.com/show/5/macbraveheart_the_other_scottish_play
