Polish FA chair calls for change of 2018 host

The chairman of the Polish football association called for Russia to be stripped of the 2018 World Cup yesterday due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Zbigniew Boniek, a former Poland international, said: “Hosting the World Cup in Russia is a disastrous mistake, it’s a country engaged in war, who invaded another country.

“In 2010 when Fifa chose Russia to host the World Cup the situation was totally different. But now when Russia is at war with Ukraine? There should be a clause in the contract between Fifa and the host country that enables the executive committee to strip that country in the event of a war. Or violating the charter of the United Nations.”

Calls for Russia to be stripped of the tournament also stem from their issues with racism and gay people.

Two hundred racist incidents were committed by Russian fans between 2012 and 2014 according to a recent report by the SOVA Centre, a Moscow-based racism-monitoring group.

And LA Galaxy’s Robbie Rogers called Fifa “insane” for awarding not only Russia but Qatar the tournament.
