Yemen: Saudi-led air strikes lead to massacre of refugees

SAUDI-LED air strikes hit a convoy of civilians fleeing fighting in southern Yemen yesterday, killing at least 31 people.

The two attacks hit a convoy of civilian vehicles travelling north from the southern city of Aden, which has seen intense fighting.

Medics described a scene of carnage, with body parts scattered across the road and smoke billowing from charred vehicles.

The Saudi-led coalition of Arab and north African nations has been bombing Yemen in an attempt to defeat Shi’ite Houthi rebels and military forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Heavy fighting continued in oil and gas-rich Marib province, east of the capital Sanaa.

UN-brokered talks between the rival factions were under way in Geneva, aimed at ending the violence and addressing the humanitarian crisis in the country.

Mediators hoped for a humanitarian truce during Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting which starts today, but neither side has shown any desire to compromise.
