Hundreds of phone jobs at risk

PLANS to move a distribution centre could leave hundreds of Carphone Warehouse staff out of a job, the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) warned yesterday.

The firm plans to shut its site at Wednesbury in the West Midlands, where mobile phones are reconditioned, and move jobs 90 miles away to Newark.

Carphone Warehouse has told staff they can keep their jobs at the new site, but the union called the pledge “laughable.”

CWU officer Vicki Cornelius said: “It’s simply not realistic for people to uproot their families and lives to move 90 miles away for a job which hardly pays well — would you do that for £17,000 a year?

“And it’s not clear if there’s financial support being offered by Carphone Warehouse or redundancy packages either.

“The workers are being left in the lurch while the company walks away.”
