EFFORTS to build bridges between Serbia and Albania were dashed today when the prime ministers of the two countries fell out publicly over the breakaway Serbian province of Kosovo.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama had arrived in Belgrade for the first visit to Serbia by an Albanian premier in 68 years.
He and his Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic were committed to putting their differences aside and focusing on their mutual desire to join the European Union.
However, Mr Rama raised the issue at their joint press conference, insisting that Serbia change its attitude.
Kosovo’s independence “is a reality. As soon as it is recognised, the faster we can move on,” Rama said, provoking a strong reaction from Mr Vucic.
“I did not expect this provocation. What does Albania have to do with Kosovo? Kosovo is not part of Albania and it will never be,” he retorted angrily.
