SHADOW Scottish Secretary Margaret Curran MP yesterday said Labour must return to “socialist principles,” as a newly launched internal party group demanded more radical action on devolution.
In an article for Scotland on Sunday, Margaret Curran wrote: “The socialist principles of equality, redistribution and social justice need to shape our politics as much today as they did when I joined the party.”
Meanwhile a group of leading party activists and others held inagural meeting of Labour for Scotland in Glasgow.
A statement published ahead of the meeting criticised Scottish Labour for joining with the Tories in the Better Together campaign, suggested full devolution of income tax powers for the Scottish Parliament and recommended autonomy for the Scottish Labour Party itself.
Former MSP Pauline McNeill told the new group: “Everyone acknowledges we lost a large chunk of the Labour vote to Yes.
“The banks, the energy companies, the markets, the big institutions all still have power in our society.
“I believe Labour voters want some change around that.”
