Northern Ireland: Police back unionist calls for Sinn Fein to quit

SENIOR Northern Ireland police officers added their weight yesterday to Democratic Unionist Party pressure on Sinn Fein to quit the power-sharing government.

The Police Federation for Northern Ireland (PFNI) said it was “concerned” that the IRA was behind the murder of dissident republican Kevin McGuigan last week.

They cited an assessment by Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) commanders that the IRA had ordered Mr McGuigan’s shooting in retaliation for the killing of former IRA leader Gerard “Jock” Davison.

PFNI chairman Mark Lindsay said: “This was a deliberate and measured assessment by the PSNI, conscious that every syllable would be placed under the microscope and weighed and analysed.

“It is a very worrying development if a command structure can be activated at will. Our members view developments with great and justifiable concern.”

An eighth arrest was made in the case earlier yesterday. No-one has been charged with Mr Davison’s murder so far.
