PAKISTAN: A bomb planted in a parked motorcycle exploded near a police vehicle in north-west Pakistan, killing at least five people and wounding 20 others today, police said.
The explosion happened in Dera Ismail Khan, a city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan, police officer Gul Sher Khan said.
AUSTRALIA: Anthony Albanese will become the first Australian prime minister in seven years to visit China in recognition that bilateral relations have improved after crashing to unprecedented lows over trade and security differences that remain largely unresolved.
Mr Albanese is due to arrive on Saturday on a three-day visit that will take him to Shanghai then Beijing, where he’ll meet with President Xi Jinping.
SOUTH AFRICA: Opposition party the Democratic Alliance removed MP Ghaleb Cachalia from the shadow cabinet on today over a social media post saying “Israel is committing genocide” in the war in Gaza.
Mr Cachalia, who served as the shadow public enterprises minister is said to have violated the party’s position on the conflict.
The party had appointed a spokesperson for the Israel-Gaza conflict and insisted that members of their caucus make no public statements that could divide or inflame the issue.
KENYA: Authorities began the brutal eviction of about 700 Ogiek people from their homes in the Mau Forest on Thursday, claiming the action was in the name of conservation.
Daniel Kobei, spokesman and chair of the Ogiek People’s Development Programme said today that his community “are living in absolute fear” and “have nowhere to turn.”
This comes as King Charles III concludes his trip to Kenya.
