10 hurt as Israelis open fire on Hebron marchers

ISRAELI troops opened fire on a peaceful Palestinian demonstration in the West Bank city of Hebron yesterday, injuring at least 10.

The march from the al-Haras mosque to Bab al-Zawiya in the city centre was called to demand that Israeli authorities release the bodies of 11 Palestinians shot dead by troops in clashes this month.

The Ma’an news agency reported that Israeli forces attacked protesters at the end of the march, including the families of the 11 dead.

Troops fired live rounds, rubber-coated steel pellets, tear gas and stun grenades, while Palestinian youths threw stones in return.

The International Solidarity Movement reported: “It was a peaceful demonstration, really just clapping and with flags, and suddenly everything was on fire.”

Hebron hospital director Dr Walid Zalloum said that at least 10 people had been brought in with gunshot wounds, another three shot with steel pellets and dozens suffering from tear-gas inhalation.
