Nicolas Maduro orders takeover of hoarding supermarket

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced the takeover of supermarket chain Dia a Dia this weekend after officials accused it of hoarding products.

He said that the chain’s 35 outlets would be assimilated into the state grocery agency but gave no details over whether the change would be permanent.

He accused the chain of “carrying out a war against the people” — one of many accusations that right-wing anti-government business owners are purposely making shopping a nightmare by hoarding goods to cause the shortages and long queues for working people.

Soldiers had occupied the chain last week and the attorney general’s office announced the continued detention of Dia a Dia director Manuel Morales on Friday.

Two executives of the country’s largest chain of chemist shops, Farmatodo, have also been detained as part of an investigation by price-control authorities.
