SOUTHWARK Council seemed to have bowed to public pressure yesterday, announcing a U-turn on its decision to ban social tenants from local gardens.
News that the London council’s planning committee had unanimously approved the request by luxury development One Tower Bridge to bar next-door Horace Jones House residents from its new gardens caused a stir last week.
After hundreds took to social media to slam the Labour-majority council for “sickening” segregation between rich and poor, a spokeswoman told the Star that Southwark “is happy to take another look.”
In an updated statement on the decisions made last week, Southwark Council said it would be speaking to the City of London and property developers Berkeley Homes to review the matter.
Lib Dem councillor Adele Morris wrote on her blog: “This reaction to the press story is shameful, and the comment now calls into question the validity of the decisions of the planning committee.”
