LABOUR MP Richard Burgon took broadcasters to task yesterday for using “politically motivated” language in their coverage of the Labour leadership contest.

Mr Burgon spoke out after Mark Mardell, host of Radio 4’s World at One, stated that Mr Corbyn represented “hard-left politics.”

The Leeds East MP contrasted the terms used to describe Mr Corbyn’s campaign and Labour’s Blairite Progress faction. “It’s not hard-left politics,” he replied. “Lots of this is deliberate politically motivated choice of language.

“Progress has been described as a mainstream group and Jeremy Corbyn’s campaign is described as hard-left. Both are unfair.”

Mr Burgon added: “Neoliberalism has ruled the roost since about 1979 and who really thinks that has worked in the interest of ordinary people?

“It’s strange that anyone who questions the consensus that has failed ordinary people is viewed as being not sensible.

“The definition of madness is doing the same thing again and again and expecting different results. That applies to economics and politics as much as anything else.”
