Xi calls on leaders to push for women’s rights in 4-point plan

CHINESE President Xi Jinping laid out plans for advancing women’s rights worldwide at the UN gender equality summit on Sunday, brushing off attacks by US presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton.

Speaking at the global leaders’ meeting on gender equality and women’s empowerment, Mr Xi set out a four-point plan.

“We should strive for women’s development in tandem with social and economic progress,” he said, adding: “Women’s rights and interests are basic human rights. They must be protected by laws and regulations.”

The Chinese president called for greater participation for women in society and the economy.

Fourth, Mr Xi called for fostering “a global environment favorable for women’s development.”

But Democratic Party prospective presidential candidate Ms Clinton called Mr Xi’s hosting of the meeting “shameless,” alleging that China had detained feminist activists.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei yesterday called Ms Clinton “biased.”

Some 210,000 women are currently held in US prisons compared with 85,000 in China.
