UKIP leader Nigel Farage would stop the BBC producing entertainment shows, he declared yesterday — including classics such as Doctor Who.
The free-market fanatic grudgingly admitted on the Andrew Marr Show that there was a “role” for a public-sector broadcaster but said it “didn’t need” to produce television for entertainment.
Industry union Bectu national official Paul Evans has argued that “no industry would benefit from a proper investment strategy like entertainment,” noting that the BBC produces shows which are exported across the world.
But pressed by Mr Marr on whether his stance meant he would “exterminate the Doctor,” Mr Farage said that in an era of “commercial challenges” “the BBC does not need to be doing all these things.”
Doctor Who is one of the BBC’s biggest international hits.
Former stockbroker Mr Farage showed greater affection for Strictly Come Dancing, moaning “no, no, no” when Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg accused him of wanting to scrap it.
