Co-op Party leader quits after 3 years

CO-OPERATIVE Party general secretary Karin Christiansen will stand down after three years, she revealed yesterday.

“It has been an utter privilege to lead the Co-operative Party,” she wrote in a letter to members.

“I am particularly proud of our successful ‘Keep it Co-op’ campaign which saw the reaffirmation of the historic link between the party and the Co-operative Group

Rightwingers within the Co-operative Group had tried to separate it from its political wing in the aftermath of the Co-op Bank’s 2013 financial crisis.

“It has not exactly been an easy period for the co-operative movement or the party,” Ms Christiansen said.

“But even in this context we have worked with the movement to champion community energy, convince government to establish a credit union for the armed forces, promoted co-operative schools and raised the profile of other co-operative ideas in political and policy circles.”
