CONSTRUCTION workers picketed the site of a new biomass power station in Widnes, Cheshire, yesterday in protest at the exploitation of underpaid overseas labour.
They said that the developers were bringing in foreign workers to undercut nationally agreed pay rates.
General union GMB said that contractors were deliberately breaking the national agreement for the engineering construction industry (NAECI) on pay and conditions.
“This looks like another case of underpaying and exploiting migrant workers while local skilled workers are ignored,” said GMB regional officer Albi McGuigan.
“Local meetings are now being arranged to organise further protests until such time that the project is categorised and NAECI registered contractors are awarded work.”
Around 65 construction workers demonstrated outside the site from 6am against Danish engineering, procurement and construction contractor Burmeister and Wain Scandinavian Contractor.
