Library staff win pay battle

SOUTH LONDON library staff celebrated a victory over their outsourced private employer yesterday when the company agreed to cancel pay cuts and hire new staff instead.

Greenwich librarians and library assistants were set to take strike action this week after Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) threatened jobs and pay at 12 local libraries.

But the company conceded and pledged to not only keep but also employ new people.

Librarians agreed to suspend strike action during upcoming talks after their union Unite labelled the GLL’s U-turn “a great victory for employee solidarity and for the preservation of an important public service.”
