Iran sees ‘horrifying surge’ in executions

A “HORRIFYING surge” in Iranian executions of drug traffickers — including some juveniles — was highlighted yesterday by political detention campaigners Amnesty International and Reprieve.

Amnesty has identified 49 juvenile convicts awaiting execution in Iran. While the death penalty is most commonly handed down for drug smuggling, most of the 73 young offenders executed over the past decade were convicted of murder.

The Amnesty report’s release was timed to coincide with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s four-day diplomatic jaunt to Italy and France.

The Iranian president told a forum of business leaders in Rome that “Iran is the safest and most stable country in the entire region.”

  • Hassan Khomeini, reformist grandson of Islamic Republic founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, has been barred from standing for Iran’s all-powerful Guardian Council, his family revealed yesterday.
