News from around Britain

HEATING: Around 3.5 million older people are worried they will not be able to stay warm this winter, charity Age UK warned yesterday.

An older person dies every seven minutes from cold weather each winter, according to Age UK's new research.

A third of over-65s are concerned about how they will heat their homes this winter and 70 per cent have fears over the high cost of energy, the research showed.

INDUSTRIAL: Around 500 workers at an oil refinery have voted to continue a grassroots strike in a dispute over safety.

Workers at the Humber Refinery in Lincolnshire decided yesterday morning not to return to work.

The refinery is owned by Phillips 66, but striking construction engineers are employed by a number of contractors.

Staff say management failed to deal with safety concerns adequately after a gas leak last week injured two men.
