India: 100s dead in unrelenting heatwave

HUNDREDS more deaths were reported yesterday as India’s soaring heatwave caused water shortages.

The death toll from dehydration and heatstroke reached 1,826 as temperatures hit 43°C.

Met officials called the heatwave “severe” and warned that it would continue across a huge swathe of the country.

Thousands of water tankers delivered supplies to more than 4,000 villages and hamlets facing acute water shortages in the central state of Maharashtra.

Scorched crops and dying wildlife were reported, with some animals succumbing to thirst.

Many poor farmers and construction workers were still working outdoors despite the risks.

Cooling monsoon rains are expected in the south next week, gradually advancing north.
