Nurses call for guarantee NHS will be safe from TTIP

Nurses rang the alarm bell yesterday over the looming privatisation threat posed to the NHS by the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership deal (TTIP).

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) joined other health unions in voicing its concern about the trade pact, which is being written behind closed doors, and the government’s refusal to secure an exemption for the health service.

RCN general secretary Dr Peter Carter has written to the government and MEPs demanding a “cast-iron guarantee” that the NHS will be safe.

A Department of Health spokesman merely claimed that the Con-Dems “would not allow TTIP negotiations to harm the NHS.”
