Help Unite to fight off new threat to the NHS

THE Unite union has launched an online petition opposing the government’s latest plan to wreck the NHS.

NHS England, the service’s national managing body, is implementing sustainability and transformation plans (STPs) affecting health service provision.

Critics say the plans are a means to cut and privatise services and close hospitals, so their abbreviation should stand for “slash, trash and privatise.”

In West Yorkshire, a local STP includes the closure of Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and the transfer of many of its services — including its accident and emergency unit — to Calderdale Royal Infirmary in neighbouring Halifax.

David Donohue, Unite’s health sector organiser in Yorkshire, said: “The government’s sustainability and transformation plan, or slash, trash and privatise programme, is being conducted in secrecy with no consultation.

“There is no evidence to support the proposals, which will result in £22 billion in cuts, massive centralisation and ward and hospital closures.”
