A TOP London university college was slammed yesterday by one of its own leading professors for jeopardising its reputation by imposing redundancies.
King’s College London plans to sack 120 academic staff by August 15. The redundancies will hit the college’s institute of psychiatry, school of biomedical Science and school of medicine.
University managers say they want to rank academics according to the level of their research grants and teaching hours.
The college belongs to the Russell Group, which represents Britain’s most prestigious universities.
Psychiatry professor Sir Robin Murray has called on the college to reverse the plans, the second wave of redundancies at King’s in five years.
He said: “Compulsory redundancies damage the reputation of an institution and make it very difficult to recruit first-rate academics. Adverse financial pressures are affecting many universities. However, other Russell Group institutions have not generally adopted the drastic action proposed by King’s College.”
Staff are balloting on industrial action.
