A WAVE of bombings and shootings shook Egypt over the weekend after former president Mohammed Morsi was sentenced to death.
The sentence was handed down by a Cairo court on Saturday over the Muslim Brotherhood former president’s role in a mass prison-break in 2011.
Three judges were shot in the Sinai Peninsula region hours after the sentencing.
Later that day a bomb targeted a courthouse in the southern city of Assiut, seriously injuring a policeman.
And a small girl was slightly injured yesterday morning when another bomb went off near a court in Port Said.
Judge Shaaban el-Shami referred his sentences on Mr Morsi and others to the nation’s senior Muslim clergyman for his non-binding opinion.
Another 105 defendants were sentenced to death in the same ruling, including 70 Palestinians and Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammed Badie.
The prison-break was part of the series of events that led to the overthrow of then-president Hosni Mubarak and Mr Morsi’s election as president of Egypt in 2012.
In Gaza, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said the Palestinians’ sentence was “regrettable” and “shocking,” adding that “some of those convicted were killed before the Egyptian revolution and others are serving prison terms in Israel.” He said nothing about Mr Morsi’s death sentence.
Mr Morsi and the other defendants may appeal their sentences.
After the verdict was read, a smiling Mr Morsi gave the four-finger sign associated with protests in support of his ousted government.
He is already serving a 20-year sentence for his role in the 2012 killing of protesters outside the presidential palace.
Mr Mubarak was convicted of corruption on May 9 and sentenced to three years in prison, but was freed immediately as he had already served the time.
Yesterday also saw the execution of six men convicted of killing two military officers during a raid on a suspected bomb factory north of Cairo in 2014.
They were also convicted of belonging to the Sinai-based jihadist militant group Supporters of the Holy House.
