CHINA dismissed US allegations of a hacking attack on government computers as unproven and irresponsible yesterday.

US officials accused Chinese-based hackers on Thursday of breaking into the computer networks of the US government personnel office and stealing identifying information of at least 4 million federal workers.

Senator Susan Collins claimed the attack amounted to a foreign power seeking information on US employees who have security clearances for access to sensitive data.

But Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei urged the US to be “less suspicious and stop making any unverified allegations, but show more trust and participate more in co-operation.

“We know that hacker attacks are conducted anonymously, across nations and that it is hard to track the source.

“It’s irresponsible and unscientific to make conjectural, trumped-up allegations without deep investigation.”

Chinese academic Shen Dingli said: “Don’t pretend America is the only victim, America also victimises others.”
