Racing: Lockinge Stakes the highlight at Newbury

Our tipster FARRINGDON casts his expert eye over the pick of the weekend’s meets

There is some tremendous racing at Newbury and Newmarket with the highlight of course being the Lockinge Stakes at the Berkshire track at 3.50 and I fancy that Montiridge could be the value in this Group One renewal on ground which will suit him.

The Richard Hannon-trained charge had a nice warm-up in the Bet365 Mile at Sandown when he wouldn’t have been entirely suited to the deep ground that day and I fancy that he will reverse that form with Tulius, the latter needs to get his toe in.

Likely favourite and stable-mate Olympic Glory has a clear chance on the best of his form but if the ground dries up any further I am not so sure that Hannon will let him take his chance.

I think we have yet to really see the very best of Chopin and he in turn is preferred to the likes of Top Notch Tonto and the former smart US dirt horse Verrazano.

There are some tough handicaps to try and unwrap this afternoon, hence they are not surprisingly in the ever growing Tote Scoop 6 and I think we shall get a huge run out of Burano in the 2.40.

This Meydan regular has not had much luck in the past year and that includes the Spring Cup here when he was blocked in his run throughout.

He once again served notice that his turn was close at Newmarket last time out and a drop to seven furlongs shouldn’t inconvenience him.

With the ground coming in his favour we may well see a return to form for Mount Athos in the Aston Park Stakes at 2.05. The state of the ground is all-important to him and the seven-year-old has Elkaayed and Battalion to beat.

Over at Newmarket, we should have similar drying conditions and that has made me rather sweet on the claims of Van Percy in the 2.20. He didn’t get the truly run race he needs here over a mile and a half last time out and this looks made to measure over the extra three quarters of a mile.

Over at Thirsk, take a chance on the old man Al Muheer off a plummeting handicap mark in the 4.00.

The old boy loves the turns of the Yorkshire track and getting weight from Eutropius and Save The Bees will help his cause.

Earlier on, Go Go Green could go well off his lightweight in the 3.25 while the best wagers at Doncaster’s evening card include Sea Meets Sky in the 7.30 and an each-way call on Enderby Spirit at 8.05.
