Scolari opts to jump on his own sword

HUMBLED Brazilian manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has resigned his post, Brazil’s football federation CBF announced on Monday night.

He stepped down after guiding his side to fourth in their home World Cup, suffering humiliating defeats at the hands of eventual winners Germany and Holland on the way.

The onetime Chelsea boss went after a meeting with CBF president Jose Maria Marin, who is scheduled to step down next year in favour of Marco Polo Del Nero.

Del Nero gave Scolari his backing after the 7-1 drubbing at the hands of Die Mannschaft.

But all sides appear to have agreed not to renew Scolari’s contract, which ran out after the tournament.

The CBF said Scolari and his entire coaching staff deserved “respect and gratitude.”
