College cuts ‘decimate adult education’

CUTS to college budgets could “decimate adult education” in the West Midlands, UCU union leader Sally Hunt told a Birmingham public meeting yesterday.

The Tories and their Lib Dem collaborators are axing adult college funding by an average 17 per cent, delivering a devastating blow to people seeking to further their education and skills.

UCU and the Association of Colleges joined Labour MP Richard Burden at a public meeting at Birmingham’s Bournville College to discuss how the cuts would affect the West Midlands.

Bournville faces a 24 per cent cut in funding.

“We should be helping people get qualifications which will help their own future, as well as society as a whole,” said Mr Burden.

Over 32,000 people have signed a petition opposing the cuts.
