BIDDERS for a key rail franchise in eastern England have been condemned as “the same tired old parade of failures, chancers and rip-off merchants who have been at it for the past 20 years.”
The Greater Anglia network provides trains between London Liverpool Street and stations in Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Norfolk.
Bidders shortlisted for a new franchise from October next year are current operator Abellio Greater Anglia, FirstGroup and National Express.
Rail union RMT general secretary Mick Cash said the list represented “the same old faces who’ve been milking the system for the past two decades, while delivering a lousy service to the travelling public, queuing up for another chance to get their snouts in the trough.”
He branded the shortlist “just another example of why Britain is crying out for a publicly owned railway run as a public service.”
