JUNIOR doctors hit out yesterday at the “unfair and unfeasible” new contracts that will force them to work more for less.
Demelza Beishon-Murley, a fifth-year medical student, and her friends joined the protest in Whitehall, Westminster, on Monday.
She told the Star: “The new contracts are unfair and unfeasible for all involved, especially for the safety of patients — who remain our number-one concern.
“Junior doctors are in any position below consultant, so there’s lots of people in their 30s who have families to support that will be affected.”
Helen Green, 29, said she’ll be a junior doctor for the best part of the next 10 to 15 years.
“During that time the Conservative government wants me to work more hours for less money, with less rest and less protection from unsafe working practices,” she fumed.
“I am cross — I don’t want a pay rise. I don’t want bonuses. I don’t want expenses. This is not about making money.
“I want fair pay for the hours I work, fair working hours, so that I am fresh to provide the safe and effective care that my patients deserve and time to study to become better at what I do.
“The contract changes threaten this.”
She added that she will be voting for strike action in the British Medical Association ballot.
“The NHS survives in part by the good nature of its staff,” said Ms Green. “We all work over our hours every single week but we do this because it needs doing.
“During my time as a junior doctor I may do research and I may have kids.
“Both adventures will be penalised by the new contracts. Working at 9pm on a Saturday will be considered equally as sociable as working at 9am on a Tuesday. Figure that one out if you can.”
