Campaign takes on pizza chain over tips

RESTAURANT chain Pizza Express is to face a nationwide campaign to let staff keep their tips.

Unite activists received details of the campaign, dubbed Stop Pinching Our Tips, by post yesterday.

The chain confiscates 8 per cent of tips paid by debit card, claiming this is an “administration fee.”

Unite Community northern regional organiser John Coan, who wrote the letter, said the union is serving up a “four-step recipe” for action.

The recipe involves targeting a Pizza Express site, lobbying staff about the campaign, protesting outside the restaurant and inside, after a meal, standing up to tell diners that the activists are giving tips in cash due to the fee.

In May Unite members marked National Waiters’ Day with a rally outside the Pizza Express in London’s Charing Cross Road.
