Webster signs on for 2016 with Cas
RUGBY LEAGUE: Castleford’s former New Zealand Test centre Jake Webster signed a new contract for 2016 yesterday.
The 32-year-old has made 48 appearances for the Tigers since joining them from Hull KR in 2013 and was out of contract this year.
Webster said: “I’m really happy to have signed for another year at Cas. I’m really looking forward to getting back to pre-season and kicking off the 2016 season.”
Ref Leatherbarrow dies aged just 26
RUGBY LEAGUE: The Rugby Football League announced the death of referee Chris Leatherbarrow yesterday.
The 26-year-old from St Helens had progressed through the ranks to become a Super League official. No details have been given about the cause of death.
RFL chief executive Nigel Wood said: “We are all truly shocked and saddened by the news of Chris Leatherbarrow’s untimely death.”
Northampton sign Picamoles
RUGBY UNION: Northampton completed a major coup yesterday by signing France number eight Louis Picamoles on a three-year contract.
Picamoles will arrive at Franklin’s Gardens next summer, bringing down the curtain on a seven-season spell at Toulouse.
The 29-year-old is one of the few players to emerge with any credit from France’s dismal World Cup and is known for his ball-carrying, athleticism and off-loads.
Tupou agrees to join Wakefield
RUGBY LEAGUE: Wakefield continued their team strengthening yesterday following their brush with relegation this year with the signing of experienced Australian forward Anthony Tupou on a two- year deal.
Wakefield coach Brian Smith said: “Anthony Tupou has chosen to join the Wildcats in what must be one of the club’s biggest moments for foreign imports.”
The 31-year-old has spent the last six years with Cronulla.
