McCluskey drives Tories out of Wales

Unite leader puts the case to trade unionists

UNITE leader Len McCluskey embarks on a whistle-stop tour of Wales today and tomorrow with a clear message for voters: “Drive the Tories from your great country.”

Mr McCluskey will cross Offa’s Dyke to mobilise union members and the public for the general election on May 7.

Sweeping across south Wales, he will remind voters of the relentless Tory attacks on the nation and urged them to turn out for Labour.

He will say: “David Cameron hear this now — your attacks on the NHS in Wales are an attack on our NHS across these lands, on every NHS employee who works tirelessly to care for people in need, on every man, woman and child for whom our NHS is the best and most decent thing about our country.

“Hear this too, we are sending you notice — pack up your smears, fears and attacks on our people because you are not wanted in Wales.”

Mr McCluskey will start the campaign at the Cardiff statue of the towering figure of Welsh socialism — Aneurin Bevan.

The Unite leader is hitting the campaign trail with shadow Wales secretary Owen Smith and Cardiff Central candidate Jo Stevens.

The constituency is just 98th on Labour’s list of 125 target seats but Ms Stevens in now odds-on with most bookmakers to unseat Lib Dem minister Jenny Willott.

Ms Stevens described the election yesterday a choice between “a country run fairly in the interests of the majority” with Labour or “rampant inequality and drastic cuts” under the Tories and Lib Dems.

She told the Star: “People here in Cardiff Central and across Wales have a critical choice to make on May 7 and by choosing Labour, they can be safe in the knowledge that a fairer, progressive government can bring hope for all.”

Mr McCluskey will also visit a business in Tonypandy that was set up by the Welsh government on the site of a Remploy factory shut by the Tories.

He will head to Torfaen tomorrow to meet Unite members and Labour candidate Nick Thomas-Symonds before visiting Neath, where he will meet Labour candidate Christina Rees.
