West Bromwich Albion head coach Tony Pulis is hoping to retain the services of Saido Berahino despite interest from a number of Premier League clubs.
The England Under-21 striker, who scored the only goal of the game in his sides 1-0 win over Hull City on Saturday, has been strongly linked with a move away from The Hawthorns following an impressive start to the season which has seen him score 14 goals.
But with the Baggies looking to pull away from the relegation zone following a poor start to the season under Alan Irvine, who was sacked at the end of December, Pulis knows that holding onto the club’s top scorer will be vital in the second half of the season.
“I’m not going to say that we are not going to sell him because if a stupid offer comes in then I’ll look stupid by saying we’re not going to sell him,” said the Welshman.
“But I will say that we are looking for another striker. And if we get another striker in and we keep him that will make my day.”
But Pulis insisted that it was going to be a challenge strengthening his squad, having taken over at the Midlands club with the transfer window already open.
“It’s going to be very difficult for us because it’s a short window and it’s such a short period of time to identify the sort of players we need to come in and make the difference.”
