Brummie cabbies hit with £1k licence

TRANSPORT union RMT yesterday launched a major campaign against taxi access charges at Birmingham New Street station, which could see drivers hit with £1,000 a year charges.

Birmingham taxi drivers already pay a fee to station operators Network Rail each time they pick up passengers but NR consultants want drivers to pay for an annual licence as well for the right to pick up passengers.

The fee would be as much as £1,000 per year.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash will meet NR bosses to explain that the fees will not be acceptable to drivers.

“None of our taxi driver members will accept Network Rail’s terms,” he said.

“They are all united and determined that no-one will pay this extortionate fee.”

He indicated the fees will backfire with drivers instead forced to ply for hire near the station, forcing passengers to walk further and creating severe congestion in the area.
