Fifa want new medical code of practice

FIFA’s medical committee will ask managers and coaches to give their input into drawing up a new code of practice for team doctors following the controversy over Chelsea’s Eva Carneiro.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho has banished team doctor Carneiro and physio Jon Fearn from the bench since the opening day of the Barclays Premier League season, when they infuriated him by running onto the pitch to treat Eden Hazard without his go-ahead.

The row prompted Fifa’s medical committee chairman Michel D’Hooghe to put the issue onto the agenda for its meeting in Zurich and it was agreed to set up a sub-committee to draw up a new code of practice.

D’Hooghe said: “We also need the voice of the coaches on this sub-committee when we draw up this code.

“On the one hand the team doctors have to abide by the Hippocratic Oath and intervene when a player is in medical need, but it also important to take account of the fact they work as part of a group under the coach.”

Caneiro, 41, is believed to be considering legal action against Chelsea if she is not restored to her former role.
