Cool beats but little character

Naytronix Mister Divine (City Slang) 3/5

The second album from Nate Brenner, the bassist with US indie percussive duo Tune-Yards, Mister Divine is an inoffensive set of soulful, psychedelic electronica.

The title track sets the scene — dreamlike, classic sounds overlaid with Brenner’s laid-back vocals intoning snippets of wisdom. Think the almost horizontal hipster favourite Kurt Vile if he ditched the long guitar solos for a laptop. Other songs such as the drum-heavy Starting Over and Back In Time (“Sometimes I wanna go back in time,” goes the not so surprising chorus) have a pleasant nostalgic, sunkissed vibe to them.

Conceived initially for DJ sets, with its cool sounds and beats the record is very easy on the ears. However, the music’s distinct lack of character means there is little to distinguish it from the slew of often bland electronica that seems to be saturating the independent music scene right now.
