Freedom Riders rally behind arrested two

SOUTH Yorkshire’s heroic Freedom Riders are mobilising to support two of their members when they appear in court in December.

Tony Nuttall and George Arthur were arrested by British Transport Police when they took part in a rally at Sheffield railway station on June 23.

The Freedom Riders were formed by Barnsley Retirees Action Group in March when South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive abolished free rail transport for pensioners and disabled people in March.

Since March 31 they have been staging “freedom rides” by boarding trains at Barnsley railway station and refusing to pay.

The campaigners were “kettled” at Sheffield station by British Transport Police after journeying by train from Barnsley on June 23 and the two were arrested.

A five-day trial is scheduled to start at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on December 8.

Union Unite has organised a free bus from Barnsley for supporters. Contact 0775 883-6854.
