Unfair sacking battle goes to 2nd strike

RAIL workers in northern England walked out for 24 hours yesterday in their second strike in protest at the sacking of a train conductor.

Weekly strikes are being staged by members of transport union RMT after conductor at Grimsby railway station was dismissed.

It followed an alleged misdemeanour involving a youth attempting to “surf” a train as it set off — hanging on to a door and balancing on an external footplate.

Talks with bosses at TransPennine Express have failed to resolve the dispute and the workers voted for a series of strikes.

They also walked out on Sunday June 7 and two more 24-hour stoppages are planned for June 21 and 28.

TransPennine Express is one of northern England’s two major private rail operators, along with Northern Rail.
