The Metropolitan Police hold more than 2,000 records in relation to journalists on a so-called “domestic extremism” database, it was revealed yesterday.
The “Fairway” database, maintained by the SO15 Counterterrorism Command unit, stores records of activist groups and events and the activities of individuals.
Following an investigation by the Times newspaper, the police confirmed that the terms “reporter,” “journalist,” “photojournalist” and “photographer” turned up more than 2,000 results. The force declined to disclose the number of results for each keyword.
The news follows the revelation earlier this year that police catalogued the activities of Green Party peer Jenny Jones over an 11-year period.
Activists are able to use data protection laws to make “subject access” requests, demanding to see if their names are recorded on police databases.
