Fight for publicly owned energy, Unison members urge

UNISON delegates told their officials yesterday to fight to renationalise energy firms.

The union already supports public ownership of utility companies but delegates flagged up the disgrace that none of the main three political parties does as well.

“Who then is going to carry out this demand?” asked Bromley delegate Glenn Kelly.

“When Thatcher privatised the utility companies we were told we would get a better deal. The reality is an industry run by the big six.

“These vile creatures of capitalism cannot be tamed or regulated.”

Saying that “we can no longer tolerate the death of fuel poverty,” Mr Kelly told energy bosses that they were lucky not to be put on trial for the 32,000 people who froze to death last winter.

Conference heard that more than half of Tory voters even support public ownership, according to a recent YouGov poll.

Delegates also recognise the need to address the effects on workers’ pension funds and small shareholders.

But no compensation should be given to millionaires, big corporations and hedge funds.
