Social justice 'a mirage' in Scotland, says Frances O'Grady

TUC general secretary claims it's still a bosses' world

Social justice in Scotland is “a mirage” while bosses rule the rest of Britain, TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady told allies in Dundee yesterday.

Ms O’Grady praised Scotland’s trade unionists at the STUC congress, saying they had placed workers’ interests “at the heart of the debate about Scotland’s future.”

But the working class had to remain united “whatever the result” of September’s independence referendum.

“Multinational companies do not respect national borders,” she said.

“The only loyalty they know is to shareholders and their own fat salaries.

“It is a mirage to believe that we can win in one country when working people — our neighbours — are losing in another.”

Ms O’Grady also urged delegates to demand a left agenda from Labour at next year’s general election — from better wages to a green, manufacturing-based economy.

Ms O’Grady urged her cohorts not to lose hope: “While a captain of industry may have power and money, he still only gets one vote.”
