African Union troops 'raped Somalian women and girls'

HUMAN Rights Watch (HRW) accused African Union (AU)troops today of raping vulnerable Somalian women and girls who came to them for help.

Soldiers lured their victims into bases in the capital Mogadishu using promises of aid before coercing them into sexual activity, HRW said.

The watchdog interviewed 21 women and girls who described being raped or sexually exploited by Burundian or Ugandan military personnel in two Mogadishu bases.

AU forces are in the region to drive militants from their last strongholds in Somalia.

At least 12 civilians have been killed by a suicide bomber targeting an AU troop convoy in the Lower Shabelle region.

Police official Hassan Ali said the death toll may rise, as it was unclear if any soldiers were killed in the blast.

It was the first attack since al-Shabab leader Ahmed Abdi Godane was killed in a US air strike last week.
