THREE leading figures in Hong Kong’s opposition movement were jailed today over their role in a siege of the police headquarters last year.

Joshua Wong — a right-wing activist known for his links to US Republican Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio — received the longest sentence, 13-and-a-half months, while fellow activists Agnes Chow and Ivan Lam received 10 and seven months respectively.

Mr Wong had pleaded guilty to helping to organise the siege of police headquarters, one of many violent confrontations between anti-China protesters and the authorities last year that saw the territory’s legislature ransacked and metro stations, shops and trade union offices trashed. Ms Chow and Mr Lam pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

Mr Wong vowed to continue his anti-government activism following the sentencing, saying: “I know this is tough, but I will carry on.”

Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai, another prominent supporter of the riots, was charged with fraud today.
