Protesters surround Netanyahu's residence calling for him to resign

PROTESTERS surrounded Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s official residence in Jerusalem again yesterday.

Over 1,000 demonstrators rallied to continue the six-months-long campaign to force the embattled premier to resign.

The protests began over Mr Netanyahu’s ongoing trial for corruption, but the government’s mishandling of the Covid-19 pandemic has now become a major flashpoint, with hundreds of thousands of Israelis out of work.

Nearly all at the demo wore masks, though not everyone observed social distancing.

Many held Israeli and pink flags, one of the symbols of the protest movement.

Others hoisted model submarines, a reference to a scandal over an Israeli purchase of German submarines in which several Netanyahu associates have been implicated. Netanyahu has not been named as a suspect in that case, though his rival and coalition partner, Defence Minister Benny Gantz of the Blue and White party, ordered an investigation into the affair this week.
