Anti-fracking campaigners rally in Manchester

Around 1,000 people marched through Manchester yesterday in protest against controversial “fracking.”

Privateers are cashing in on government support for the process, which involves shattering layers of underground shale and pumping in water and chemicals to extract gas.

Opponents says the process threatens the environment and water supplies.

Protests have sprung up at sites across the North West and Yorkshire.

Campaigners also lobbied the Labour Party conference in Manchester yesterday.

Speakers at the event included Tina Louise from Nanas Against Fracking, who told of her campaign group’s victory in getting Fylde Borough Council to oppose fracking by private firm Cuadrilla.

Other speakers included Green Party leader Natalie Bennett, John McDonnell MP and protest veteran Anne Power.
